About Us

Save-A-Dog Scheme is a community-based not-for-profit animal welfare organisation based in Melbourne Australia. We save and rehome hundreds of dogs and cats every year. A leader of the no kill movement since 1985, we work steadfastly for change from a culture of killing companion animals to a culture of saving them. SADS do not use paid fundraisers.

Our temporary measures in response to the current stage 4 restrictions

COVID 19 update 23/11/20

Our temporary measures in response to COVID19

Thank you for your patience and understanding, while we have been working hard to ensure we have measures in place for the health and safety of the community, our staff and our animals.

Public Access:

Our reception area is open, following social distancing guidelines – however appointments must be made in advance for adoptions, animal viewing, surrenders and reclaims. We’re unable to take “walk in’s” to view or adopt animals without prior bookings.

Our Kennel and Cattery remain closed except by appointment for adoption and reclaims only and cannot accommodate general “browsing” at this stage, due to social distancing challenges in these areas.

How do I book an appointment:

Adoption:

All adoption bookings are made by us contacting you, if you are a successful adoption applicant.

Applications for dogs or cats are made via our website. Each animal in the “animals for adoption” section has an “apply to adopt me” button under their description.

We are logistically unable to maintain a wait list for people wishing us to contact them when specific breeds, puppies etc arrive at the shelter.

Lost and found:

Arrangements can be made by phoning 9824 7928 or 0418 389 810 where you’ll find a comprehensive message and the numbers you need depending on your circumstances.

All other bookings:

All other bookings or enquiries can be made by phoning 9824 7928 or 0418 389 810 and leaving a message, we aim to reply within 24 hours, or emailing admin@saveadog.org.au

Fostering:

As we are experiencing such high volumes of enquiries, please do not contact us in relation to fostering right now. We’ll update our website and Facebook when we’re asking for help again.

We are very grateful for the unprecedented response we’ve had from the public in relation to fostering. We now have over 50 animals in foster care and already have over 200 further requests we’re working through before we’ll consider taking any more.

Volunteering:

With staff and volunteer capacity restrictions, we are not currently able to utilise all our volunteers on file, and therefore, do not have any vacant volunteer positions, but some may become available in the future. To put your name on a register for an interview, should volunteer positions become available, please email admin@saveadog.org.au please include your contact details, experience and availability.

Entering the Shelter:

Visitors must:

  • wear a mask or face covering (unless a medical exception applies)
  • clean or sanitise your hands
  • keep 1.5 m away from staff or other visitors

Do not visit us if:

  • you have a cough, cold, fever or flu-like symptoms
  • you have tested positive for COVID-19 or are awaiting test results
  • you have been in contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19
  • you have returned from overseas in the last 14 days
